Northland Students Think Sustainably
for Annual Class Gift

Five years ago, students at environmentally-minded Northland College in Ashland, MN, voted create a Renewable Energy Fund by charging themselves annual $40 fee. This year the current students purchased a fuel-efficient Toyota Hybrid for their admissions department, which travels across the region by car in thier recruiting process.

Brown is Green Program

Brown University's "Brown is Green Program" promotes campus environmental responsibility and resource conservation . The cooperative effort by all departments, staff, students, and faculty was established in 1990. The "Brown Is Green" program is Brown's educational and advocacy program which links student research and education efforts with administrative offices. The Department of Plant Operations manages the Brown Recycling Program and implements many of the resource conservation efforts.

With the Kyoto Protocol now in effect without the United States participating, cities and business are looking for a local way to meet the goals of Kyoto. In 2003, Lewis & Clark College was the first campus in the nation to comply with the greenhouse gas emissions targets called for in in the Protocol.

University of North Carolina

University of North Carolina passed a renewable energy referendum at Chapel Hill, bringing around $200,000 for renewable energy projects every year beginning 2004-2005. The referendum increases student fees by $4 per semester for renewable energy projects on campus.
